In 2014, Original Beans rescued this rare bean that was on the brink of distinction, nearly displaced by hybrid cacao, disease, floods and wild animals. Slowly, the Kerafat trees are being renewed in West Papua, home to one of the largest untouched tropical rainforests in the world and the birds of paradise—considered sacred by indigenous tribes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_column_text]The region’s economy is threatened by mining, illegal logging, and land clearing for palm oil production.
